Michelin's factory expansion project

September 24,2024

On September 21, local time, TRB Rajaa, Minister of Industry of Tamil Nadu, India, said that the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion project of tire giant Michelin's manufacturing plant in Chennai was held.

It is reported that the plant will invest 563.67 billion rupees to expand Michelin's existing manufacturing plant to produce passenger car tires.

Rajaa said the new factory will be one of Michelin's best in the world, built on Industry 5.0 principles and advanced sustainable development practices, combining artificial intelligence, robotics and automation to streamline production and improve efficiency.

It is understood that Michelin's Chennai plant was established in 2014 and produces about 49,000 tons of TBR tires annually. Lately, Michelin has been importing radial passenger car tyres for the Indian market. The new investment is in line with its 'local to local' strategy, focusing on being close to Indian consumers and reducing environmental impact.

With the increasing popularity of passenger cars in India, especially SUVs, the demand for high-quality tires is rising. The new production line to be built at the Chennai campus will produce premium passenger car tyres for the Indian market in sizes up to 21 inches.

Florent Chaussade, executive director of Michelin India Ltd, said the first batch of automotive radial tyres from the new plant is expected to roll out by the third quarter of 2025.
