On December 11, 2024, Michelin, a leading tire manufacturer and composites innovator, and Brembo, a leader in the design, development and production of braking solutions, have signed a global agreement to exploit the full potential of their intelligent solutions to revolutionize vehicle performance and provide drivers with the ultimate standards of safety and comfort.
In this collaboration, Michelin and Brembo combine their respective technical expertise: Michelin has industry-leading tire modeling and algorithm development, while Brembo has excellent braking systems, vehicle modeling and artificial intelligence technologies.
This collaboration integrates Michelin's tire-connected solutions with Brembo's innovative SENSIFY® braking system to deliver real-time data exchange and precise performance enhancements. Benefiting from these unique characteristics of the tires, engineers were able to fine-tune the braking system with extreme precision, further enhancing the characteristics of SENSIFY.
Michelin's tire-connected solutions benefit from the Group’s recognized expertise in tire physics modeling and simulation in tire development. With its unique expertise in real-time vehicle data analysis, Michelin has developed a range of software that provides real-time information such as SmartWear, SmartLoad and SmartGrip to vehicles. Michelin's software is applicable to all tire brands.
Brembo SENSIFY® sets new industry standards for braking systems, developed specifically for modern vehicles. Its high degree of flexibility, scalability and adaptability make it easy to integrate into any model. SENSIFY® combines Brembo's world-renowned brake components with a digital brain that uses artificial intelligence, algorithms and sensors to independently control each wheel. The design combines excellent driving experience with higher safety, making it stand out among many advanced braking systems.
The performance of both the simulation and actual testing phases of the initial testing was encouraging. In the first phase, Michelin's tire models and algorithms were integrated with Brembo's intelligent braking models and vehicle simulation in a completely virtual environment. In the second phase, physical tests were carried out on the track at Michelin's R&D center and the simulation results were confirmed.
Tests have shown that, under different conditions, with the same tires and ABS engaged, the braking distances can be reduced by up to 4 meters (13 feet), which is impressive considering that 4 meters is close to the average length of the car.
Beyond shorter stopping distances, the tests highlighted additional benefits, including improved stability, faster braking response, and the absence of wheel locking. These advancements mark a significant leap toward safer, more comfortable driving experiences.
Serge Lafon, President of Michelin Group's Automotive Original Equipment business line, said:"We are delighted to be working with a leading brand like Brembo. Our shared passion for innovation and excellence will allow us to take a new step forward in improving user safety. Giving customers peace of mind and allowing them to use their tires for as long as possible is a core goal of Michelin, protecting both customer purchasing power and the environment. Today, Michelin is a 'data-driven company' where simulation and software development are essential tools for real-time monitoring of tires. Together, Michelin and Brembo are building a unique solution for the vehicles of the future, developed today by the car makers."
Daniele Schillaci, CEO of Brembo, said: "At Brembo, we believe in the power of technology and artificial intelligence. SENSIFY® represents the new standard in braking that will target a zero accidents vision."
This partnership signifies a pivotal step forward in enhancing vehicle safety, performance, and driving comfort, benefiting both automakers and consumers worldwide.
